Out on the town.

Last night we celebrated Laura’s birthday by going on a wine bar crawl downtown.  We had picked out 6 or so places ahead of time to stop in at for appies and drinks during the night.  We made it to 5 of them!  In crawl-order:  Prelog’s, Irene’s, True Food Kitchen, La Condesa & The Secret Bar at the W Hotel.  A good time was had by all.

I especially liked this overhead light fixture at La Condesa:

Seen on a building along one leg of the crawl…. i agree 🙂IMG_0559 (1)

Cache-sitter.

We anchored out in our cove last night with Marty & Sue, and Kurt & Kevin.  This morning I paddled around to check on the 2 geocaches that I have hidden along the shore there.   The first one was still there, just above the highest level of floodwater.   I lifted a rock and found it.   Right next to it was critter I would rather not have come across!

Na Zdorovie!

White Russians, all around!  Vodka, Kahlua & milk over ice.   We’re channeling The Dude.

Howdy, neighbors!

We have many deer that roam our neighborhood, being located close to a number of greenbelts.  We enjoy them.  Like most of our neighbors, we restrict the tasty and ornamental flowers to our fenced backyard, and have learned to plant the more pungent deer-resistant greens in the front yard.

This week I noticed two deer have taken up residence in our neighbor’s large fenced backyard.   It’s unlikely that they cannot get out of the yard, so I assume they are just very content to stay put.   They are not overly concerned with us tramping around our back yard.    I took this picture using my telephoto from about 150 feet away.

And now for something completely different…

We heard about a play near campus called Shit-faced Shakespeare, and went to see it tonight.  Yep, you guessed it:  one cast member is supposed to be very, very drunk, while the show goes on.   I suspect it actually involves more acting than inebriation.

It’s not for everyone, but whether they are actually sh!t-faced or pretend, it’s a funny show.

It’s showing at Spider House Ballroom – little over an hour long.  And they have a bar in the back.

Got him!

This post isn’t really photoblog-worthy, except that it is a follow-up to a post from last week.  Monte had built a trap to catch the armadillos who were turning our waybackyard into a lunar landscape.    Well, we caught one!    He’s a Nine-banded armadillo.  They live to be 12-15 years old!

I was very excited to see, from a distance, that the trap had triggered.  And after sneaking a peek, I was happy to find a dillo inside and not a skunk!  We released him in a wooded area far enough away (I hope) to keep him from returning.

We’ve reset the trap out back, in case there are others in his crew.

Us 1.  Them 0.

I loves me some cheese.

🙂

To catch a varmit.

Stay tuned…

Pet store stop.

From time to time, we like to stop in at the pet store where Keeto found us.  They have birds of all sizes, bunnies, fish, and the new resident — a large tortoise.  His name is Columbus, because he walks around the store, exploring, all day.  He’s a big one, over 2 feet long.

I guess my iPhone camera skills are ruined now that I have my new camera 🙂    This was the best shot I took.

The river giveth, and the river taketh away.

Well, mostly the river taketh away.

It’s a risk we deal with, spending so much time playing on the water.  And, it so happens that this past weekend I lost yet another pair of prescription sunglasses.   I was helping put up a friend’s wind scoop on the bow and the wind whipped things up and the next thing I knew they were sinking below the surface of the lake.  I summarily jumped in to try to grab them, but to no avail.

I lost a different pair of prescription Raybans on the San Marcos rapids a few years ago.  Monte lost a pair of prescription glasses there, too.  A friend lost their wedding band on the same rapids.  I’ve lost three favorite hats, a towel, and know of at least one bathing suit top and diamond earring sitting at the bottom of the lake.   And, amazingly, we lost our entire flag and flagpole that was flying off our transom – on the Fourth of July, no less!  It happens so frequently that we keep a Lost Sh#t Log on the boat.

But every once in a while, the river gives back.  About 10 years ago, I lost a pair of prescription eyeglasses in the lake.  One minute they were sitting on the cabin-top while I tightened my pony tail.  The next minute they were gone.   Over the following few years the lake alternately rose and dropped.   Until, about 3 years after I lost them, the lake was finally low enough that the place where we anchored the day I lost my glasses was high and dry.  So one Saturday morning, I announced that I was going back to that part of the cove to look for my glasses.   And I did.   I combed that dry cove for an hour or two.   I found a snorkel, swim goggles, a swim fin, numerous pieces of fishing tackle, several pairs of sun glasses, a hat, an anchor, lots of trash, AND my lost-for-three-years eyeglasses!

They were sun-bleached and cruddy and one ear piece had broken off.  But there they were!  I can’t bring myself to throw them away.  So they sit in a drawer until I take them out for a chuckle every once in a while.

Beergarden view.

We met Fran and Art for a beer after work yesterday.  This is the view from the outdoor beer garden.  The air is hazy from the smoke of nearby fires.   That is Vashon Island in the background.   Last fall I posted about a guy living in a shed on a floating raft anchored off this point.  Well, his shed burned down since then, and now he’s got a teepee on the raft.   A gaggle of geese are crossing in front of it.

Whoa, Nellie.

I took a walk around the hood tonight to hit my step target. And I came across this little lady who was very wary of me.   I said hi, took a picture and kept moving on down the road.  I’d like to think that she has a similar snap of me.

Beauty up above.

I took a walk through our greenbelt and neighborhood after the immense amount of rain stopped falling.  I looked up and was treated to this before sunset:

Tree house.

Today was a beautiful sunny Sunday.  I spent the day gardening.  On my way out back this morning, I noticed a bird fly out of our mimosa tree.  On second look he really did fly out of the tree.  Must be a woodpecker?
