A walk in the woods.

The cold and rain finally let up here in Austin, after a week. So, I set out to explore the new North Walnut Creek trail that was supposed to be recently finished. I was looking forward to a 6+ mile walk on the new trail. The nice, new trailhead at Balcones Park:

The lovely paved sidewalk ended about 100 yards later and the rest of my walk was through muddy, rocky trails. Walnut Creek was flowing pretty good due to recent rain, so I wasn’t always able to cross where the trail crossed. My shoes and feet were wet before too long. I got pretty messy, but it was great!

I was taken aback by the amount of trash near the trail. We’ll have to rally the troops to clean it up. This was one sight – the tire has been there a while…the tree has grown up through it.

And, I guess if you must deface things with spray paint, the least you can do is make it pretty and add a thought provoking statement…

AND While I was out and about, I found 7 geocaches. 🙂

A fun Sunday!

Caching in the cold.

Fran and I went geocaching today. This cold front brought temps in the 20s overnight. And apparently it stays below freezing in parts of the woods.
This is one of the ponds we encountered, covered in ice.

Factoid of the day.

Because I’m wont to do such things when bored, I googled some mushroom terminology on the web. You know…inquiring minds, and all….
And so now I know that this is a troop of mushroom clusters. 🙂

Bonus factoid: After writing the text above, I wondered if the correct term was “inquiring minds” or “enquiring minds.” So, I googled that too. Apparently, there may be a difference in some British texts; but I think I’m ok. You get the idea. 🙂 🙂

100% chance of woo hoo!

I’m very thrilled to see the weather forecast for the next few days.  FINALLY some not-rainy days!

I’m looking forward to spending some time outside!  This morning I got an early start… went for a long hike in the woods.   This shot shows the just risen sun peeking through the tree trunks at the horizon.

And in the middle of my hike I came upon this tranquil view.  Very pretty.

Quiet Sound.

Yesterday my walk took me to a nearby state park where I used to spend time as a kid. I had the place to myself. There was hardly a ripple on the water.

A fungus among us.

Wow, they grow them big up here in the Northwest!  These toadstools are 6-8″ across.  Google sez they are amanita muscaria and the not-for-eating-variety.  Very colorful, though.IMG_6222

A view from the penumbra.

Crazy weather here. It rained and poured this morning. Then we had an hour or two of sunny blue sky, which afforded a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse through a hastily-made pinhole camera.

Then the cloud bank rolled in again with rain. I’m glad mom had a chance to watch it, if only for a half hour or so.
Pretty cool.
The next solar eclipse will be on August 21, 2017. Mark your calendar!

Hello dahlia!

I passed a front yard full of dahlias in bloom today.  This one was leaning over the chain link fence for me to take its picture.

A moment from a lovely walk.

Rain is in the forecast for the entire week here.  I timed my walk today for what I hoped to be a break in showers.  As it turned out, l made it back home after an hour or so with barely a drop on me.

I was listening to Pandora, and as I crested a hill on my way home I turned up the volume when I heard one of my faves through my earbuds – Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole’s cover of Somewhere over the Rainbow.  As I was listening, I turned my head and coincidentally saw a faint rainbow lit up during a brief sunbreak – making the song even a little more enjoyable than usual.   Nice.

And now, for something completely different…

Last week I began a short break from the rat race, taking a couple months off from work.

Soooo….I went shopping on Monday; golfing on Tuesday; sailing on Wednesday; woke up at anchor Thursday morning; back to the lake Friday for two nights on the boat; rafted up with Kurt & Kevin on Dancer, and Marty & Sue (yay!!) on Caribbean Hug Saturday night; made it back home Sunday night to watch my Seahawks and make pizza; and then headed to Seattle for a visit this past Monday.

I’ll try to get my sheila365 groove back. 🙂

Yay, us!

We took a roadtrip over the weekend to celebrate our anniversary.  I’ll skip the narrative and just let some pictures tell the story.

Happy anniversary, sweetie!

And the cotton is high…

The words are swimming around in my head:

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high….

I like Billie Holiday’s version.

We took a trip to the Coastal Bend of Texas for a few days.   We come down here nearly every year, and really enjoy it.   Very rustic, but beautiful.   Along the way to the coast, we drive through the cotton fields.   This time we came a little earlier than usual, and we got to see the fields before harvest.   A sea of white fluffiness:

A few more pics from Seattle.

In the summer, sunset seems to linger for a very long time in Seattle.   This is a shot I took from the ferry on the way home from the game.  It must have been about 9:30pm.  In this wide panorama you can still see the glow of the sun past the horizon on the left…the city lights including the space needle, the great wheel, and both century link and safeco stadium…and the rising supermoon on the right.

I’ve gotten tired of trying to guess which side of Mt Rainier we’ll fly by on my return flights to Austin.  So, I just kept the seat that I was assigned – window on the left side.   I got lucky this time and we flew north-to-south past the western face of this great mountain, turning to the southeast as we passed it.

IMG_5545

The haze nestled amongst the surrounding foothills is smoke from the ongoing fires in Central Washington.  A couple of factoids:  Mt Rainier is a volcano;  elevation of 14,410′;  last recorded eruption was in the 1st half of the 1800’s;  home to 26 major glaciers and many ice fields; 6 rivers have glaciers on Mt Rainier as their source.  Read more here.

We flew very close to the summit.  In this shot of the western face, you can see Sunset Amphitheater on the left and Tahoma Glacier on the right.  The black ring on the top right of the dome is the volcanic crater.  The summit, Columbia Crest is along that black ring.

Breathtaking.

Blackberries.

One bunch of the seemingly endless supply of blackberries growing in these parts.
