Labor Day weekend.

We had alot of fun with Fran and Rachel this week.   The house is guest-free again.  Well, except for the parrot we are house sitting. 🙂

We enjoyed a fun weekend on the lake – Saturday’s sunset:

We spent Labor Day down by Zilker Park and paddling on Ladybird Lake.  A friendly swan:

Then we threw some lambburgers and hamburgers on the grill to celebrate the holiday.

A short work week is a busy work week.  I didn’t make time to post til now.  I’ll try to not be so slow with my updates.  Have a great weekend!

Time capsule.

We spent a long weekend together – my sisters, brother and me.  Time to empty the house.  We stayed at mom’s house together and shared feelings, memories, and laughs while going through a lifetime of keepsakes and all manner of things.

A poem I wrote at age 12:

The Tide.

Pouncing endlessly on the weary, defenseless shore of sand and rocks.  Constantly charging and retreating, high tide or low.  The tide never sleeps, but sometimes weakens to a slow, silent creep. Always bringing in waves that turn into a frothing, white foam.  The shore can never rest from this endless beating; never.

Yeah.  It’s not Shakespeare. 🙂  I found a number of my poems – long forgotten.  Ironically many are about some aspect of Nature.  But maybe that’s not ironic after all.

So much stuff.  Preserved in time for 50+ years.   Birth announcements, funeral prayer cards, decades of pictures, letters, cards, gifts, momentos… points in time defining the lives of my mom and dad and all they held dear.

1st or 2nd grade, maybe?

But I digress.  We made a dent in it and have a garage full of neatly packed bags and boxes for donation, shredding, recycling and trash.

I spent the day today with Fran and kids – geocaching in what turned out to be a downpour.  We got soaked but found every cache in the park.  At one point we came across 3 big woodpeckers.  They didn’t sit still, so I didn’t get much of a shot.  But, here ’tis.

I wish you all a peaceful week.

One fine day.

Today we set out for a day of crabbing.  What a beautiful day!  Sky was blue.  Sun was out.  We got our fill of crab – both dungeoness and rock crab.  We boiled them up at home and were treated to an exceptional dinner.

At one point during the day, a bald eagle circled right above us for a while, riding the thermals.   This was the best I could capture.  Pretty bird.

Beergarden view.

We met Fran and Art for a beer after work yesterday.  This is the view from the outdoor beer garden.  The air is hazy from the smoke of nearby fires.   That is Vashon Island in the background.   Last fall I posted about a guy living in a shed on a floating raft anchored off this point.  Well, his shed burned down since then, and now he’s got a teepee on the raft.   A gaggle of geese are crossing in front of it.

Afternoon excursion.

We dashed out to Mayfield Park today to see the peacocks and the pretty grounds, found a geocache, and then climbed atop Mount Bonnell to enjoy the view.

A nice day, indeed.

Whoa, Nellie.

I took a walk around the hood tonight to hit my step target. And I came across this little lady who was very wary of me.   I said hi, took a picture and kept moving on down the road.  I’d like to think that she has a similar snap of me.

Mosquito warfare.

Stay tuned.

Tree house.

Today was a beautiful sunny Sunday.  I spent the day gardening.  On my way out back this morning, I noticed a bird fly out of our mimosa tree.  On second look he really did fly out of the tree.  Must be a woodpecker?

A Saturday break in the rain.

I went for a walk this morning… down to another bay on the sound.  This pod of orcas live here year round.  I was hoping to find the real ones, but these will have to do.   You can get a glimpse of the fall color that is popping on this first Saturday in November.

Fran and I also managed to get away for a round of golf this afternoon.  I’m glad I brought my clubs this trip.  Definitely worth it.

Also, I see that wordpress has added a widget and some links to help get out the vote.  I sent my absentee ballot in this week.   Get your vote counted on Tuesday…

What a difference a week (and 2-3 feet) makes.

Today’s low tide was 4.5′ higher than last week.   So…no problem getting out.   We spent the entire day on the boat crabbing.   And boy did we get some big ones.

This is the same place that we were high and dry last week.   IMG_5378

And one of the huge dungeness crabs:

Oh, and I learned that Pacific rock crab is pretty much the same as Florida stone crab.   Delicious lesson.  Yum!

Paddling around.

My mom’s sister is here visting, another is arriving this week.   Today they’re spending the morning together catching up.  So, I headed out to go kayaking near Hood Canal with Noreen, her friend Tammy and her son, Matt.  I think I’m starting to sound like a broken record, but it was a BEAUTIFUL day.   The water was flat and calm, and the tide wasn’t fighting us too badly.

My front row seat:

This area is full of bald eagles.  Here’s a pair that were watching us as we went by:

And yes, the obligatory panorama 🙂

Friday evening on the Sound.

This afternoon we hit the Sound, again, with Fran, Art, Rebecca and Aaron.   We hopped onto their boat at this beach.IMG_4174

Then motored over to watch a local marina’s Friday night regatta up close.

Then toodled around to see what we could see.  On the left, a sea lion sunning himself on a buoy.  In the background, Mt. Rainier, Blake Island and a Seattle-bound ferry.

It was beautiful out, but not necessarily warm.

And, a lovely sunset.

Memorial Day.

Wow!  The weekend has zoomed by!

Today we headed over to Noreen’s to celebrate Memorial Day.   On the way we stopped by the cemetery to put a flag and flowers on Dad’s grave.  Cheers, Dad!

We spent the day together:  Noreen, Jared & Kelsey; Fran, Art, Rebecca, & Aaron (& Jojo); Colleen & Jake; Monte, Mom & me.  Brian was down with the flu, so he and Gail will have to join us another time.  It was another amazingly beautiful day in the Pacific Northwest when it was really supposed to be raining.

Jared and Kelsey cooked up the burgers & dogs, and we put out all the fixings;  we also had halibut that Art caught just a day ago off the Washington coast.  Delicious.   Afterwards most of us headed down the road for a hike to the beach.   Wow, that sure was steep!   We found one of the 2 geocaches we searched for along the way.

This is a panarama, looking west to the Olympics, of the beautiful beach along Hood Canal at the bottom of our 1 mile, downhill, switchback-y hike. Becca and Aaron are skipping stones and Jojo is splashing around.

Then we turned around and slogged up the way we came down and were all extremely happy when we made it back to the upper trail head.  Whew-ie!!

Tuesday night Broadway.

We went to see War Horse tonight at the Bass Concert Hall. I was more taken by the intricate, life-sized horse puppets than the overall story. But, it was opening night, and was well done.
