Old times.

Google tells me that the 18th century Scots phrase “auld lang syne” translates literally to “old long since,” or roughly to “old times” or “old times past” in English. As I was looking back through photos from 2020, I found one from New Year’s Day 2020 that perfectly depicts the old times, in stark contrast to the times we live in now, post-COVID.

This was taken a year ago at Ann’s New Year’s Day party; a very casual, annual, bring-whatever-leftovers-you-have, game-day get together with friends. I look forward to it every year. But not this year, sadly. This picture really reminds me how long it’s been since I hung out with a bunch of people, in close quarters, heads together, laughing and hugging, with no masks, or worries (other than, perhaps, a lingering hangover). I do hope we get back to this, eventually. Soon. We simply must.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

We got game.

Last night we enjoyed a fun New Year’s Eve celebration at our house, clocking in at 3AM by the time we went to bed.   Temperatures have dipped into the 20s, for the next few days.   We even got some snow last night, so the merrymaking  was pretty much restricted to indoors.    Nonetheless, a good time was had by all.

The day after New Year’s Eve has come to mean spending the afternoon at Ann & Dave’s house, playing games with friends and friends-of-friends.  It is a very-low-key, come-as-you-are, and bring-your-leftovers-and-libations kind of affair.  Some people creep in, looking a little worse for wear after a fun night of celebrating.  Other regulars are missing in action.  But, eventually, everyone perks up, ends up laughing, telling stories, and making plans for the new year that has just begun.

One of the New Year’s Day games that has become a regular is a home-made version of Jeopardy.  The mistress-of-ceremonies for the last several years has been Doray.  This year she, again, painstakingly prepared the categories, questions and answers.   Very fun!

Here we go again!

I wish you a most happy, loving, and exciting 2014! I’m counting my blessings while reeling through memories from the year we just wrapped up. Here’s to the next lap ’round the sun. Cheers!

That’s a wrap!

Next stop: 2013.
Next stop: 2013.

Adieu 2012.  Not the best of years.  Not the worst.

We celebrated the evening with friends.  The murder-mystery theme was fun.  It was set in 1969, so the costumes were a bit … far-out, man.   I was Enya Goddard-Daveeda, high priestess of the Church of the Vacant Mind.  My costume instructions were to wear all white:  gogo boots, flowing robe & miniskirt.   Can you believe I found knee-high white platform-heeled gogo boots that laced up the back?!!  Thank you Goodwill!

It is fun to get a little silly.   And we did.

As is the custom, Monte played Auld Lang Syne on the saxophone at midnight, and everyone sang along.  We also played an encore out on the front lawn just to make sure noone was asleep.

I don’t exactly know what my resolutions are.  I do know that I want 2013 to be a year with a little more peace, love and understanding.   I guess we’ll have to figure out what we each should do to make that happen along the way.

Cheers!
