Cheers!

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

We dashed down to our local pub after work tonight to drink Irish beer and eat corned beef and cabbage for dinner.

I didn’t have my camera with me, but monte has mastered his new phone for taking and uploading photos.  So here ’tis!

Cake for breakfast.

Happy Birthday to my sweetie.   The cake turned out nicely… moist, not too sweet, and a hint of guinness 🙂

It’s always nice to take your birthday off as a vacation day.  But we both worked today.  After work, we went for dinner at Captain’s and Monte got a dozen on the half shell and then we went to the Dart Bowl to bowl a couple games.    Seems like we’re a bit out of practice for real-world bowling since we’ve started wii-bowling.    But we eventually got back in the groove.

Beer… or cake… or both?

Monte’s birthday is tomorrow so I’m going after two of his favorites at the same time… chocolate cake and guinness 🙂

I found this recipe from Nigella Lawson and am giving it a try tonight.  I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Update:  It was DELICIOUS!  try it!

Happy 1st blogoversary!

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my starting this blog.   To mark the occasion, I made a collage using all 365 of the moments that I’ve posted here.

I can recall taking each one.   🙂

I started this in early March last year, in time to capture the signs of Spring, and into the Summer as things began to warm up and as we spend so much time on the lake… then through the changes in Fall and Winter when we spend more of our time on projects and playing with friends on land.  I’ve come full circle, and am looking forward all the moments from the coming year.

Happy Mardi Gras!   and  HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lori and to Mary!

Day #365!!!

Today’s post makes the 365th moment that I have shared with you.  This is a shot of one of the geraniums I planted yesterday that I took today during a break between conference calls.

I’m very pleased that I have stuck with this post-a-photo-per-day-for-a-year project.  There were some days that I found it difficult to see something worth sharing.   But I have to say that most days I looked forward to toting my camera around with me, and was usually pleased to find a moment that was either a photo that I liked or at least made for a nice story to share.

Wow, a year.   365 moments.   It goes by fast.

I look forward to keeping my blog going.  I don’t know that I will be posting something every day, but I am definitely looking forward to posting more moments worth sharing.

A colleague of mine passed away over the weekend after a fight with cancer.  He was only 51.

I can only hope that you all have many more years left on this earth to share with your friends and family.   But since we never know when our time will be up, we have to take the time to enjoy and be thankful for each and every day that we get to spend with them.   I have done that for a year.   And I hope to from here on out…

Better late than never.

Happy Day After National Margarita Day!!

Yes, that’s right.   I missed the opportunity yesterday to post a margarita moment on a day set aside to honor margaritas of all shapes and sizes.

Not a problem.  We made sure to grab a couple of margs at Chuy’s tonight to make up for it.

Yes.  That’s my frozen mango margarita on the left.  I’m sort of a margarita wimp.  It has to do with some harrowing experiences from my early college days.  Long story.  Suffice to say, I still enjoy a taste of tequila, but I need to disguise it as a fruity and icy beverage.

That’s Monte’s Texas Martini on the right — complete with jalapeno-stuffed olives.

Cheers!

What the Doctor ordered.

Nobody really likes Mondays.  But, today was especially unpleasant for me as I seem to have gotten some kind of stomach bug in the morning that laid me low all day.

Later in the evening we had a light dinner with some rose’ wine — not something we typically drink.   This is an inexpensive rose’ cabernet savingnon from South Africa called Mulderbosch.   We tried it once at a wine tasting at a nearby wine store and liked it.  So, it has stayed on our list.

Just what I needed to end a yucky day.

Before and after.

I set out to weed the flower beds today to get them ready for planting.   We have a bed about 4 feet deep that runs along our fence for about 30 feet, and several other beds scattered throughout the back yard.

The image on top is what greeted me in the wasteland left over from the basil and zinnias last fall.  The image on the bottom shows the bed after weeding, rototilling and fertilizing.

I finished up right at noon.   We came in and had lunch — leftover vegetable soup that monte made last night.   I have to say this is the Best Vegetable Soup Ever.  I should have taken a picture of it last night, but I didn’t.   It’s chock full of carrots, turnips, celery, leeks and cannelloni beans — delicious.   The least I can do is post the recipe, which we once again lifted from our bon ami Jacques Pepin (recipe and video from the episode here) – Happy Cooking!

Movie night.

Ok, well, not really movie night.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow is a 3-day special version of Jeopardy (the game show) featuring an IBM computer called Watson playing against 2 former Jeopardy champs.

So we sat down with a bowl of popcorn to watch.   Watson kicked butt tonight.   Amazing.

Le pain de l'amour.

Happy Valentine’s Day!! ♥

My valentine gave me beautiful roses, and chocolate covered strawberries which we shared this afternoon.  I took a few pics of them.  But when I saw the shape of the baguette slices that we ate with lunch, I couldn’t resist posting this shot of one of them.

A perfect moment for a day celebrating love and those you love.   🙂

Crab-with-a-C.

Monte brought home some snow crab leg clusters from the grocery this morning.  We just had them for lunch and they were delicious.

He learned an easy, excellent way to re-heat already cooked and previously frozen crab legs from an Alton Brown episode.   They turn out moist and warm, and did I say it was easy?   If you like crablegs too, you should try it:

EZ Snowcrab legs for 2

– 2 clusters of unfrozen snowcrab legs (about 8 ounces each)
– Wrap clusters completely  in damp paper towels
– Cook on high in microwave for 3 mins
– Dump out on butcher paper (careful, it’s HOT)
– Crack open and dip in whatever floats your boat

Enjoy!

First pour.

This is the only shot I snapped today.  We’ll put this one in the boring column.

Okay, technically, there was one other shot, but it was taken a bit too close and the lens was all fogged up from the steam rising off the coffee filter.

Boring or not, it is a moment I look forward to every day.   Using these  Melitta cones takes a little more work than an automatic coffee maker but they make a great cup of coffee!

Ravioli!

Santa brought a pasta roller accessory for the kitchen-aid mixer.   We tried the spaghetti and fettuccine cutters a few weeks back.

Tonight we made ravioli for dinner… with a little goat cheese and spinach filling, a little feta and anchovy filling.

I’m pretty sure this is what kitchen islands were invented for 🙂
