The first weekend of Fall. A coldfront dropped in this afternoon. We headed to the lake to sail the Beer Can, and then anchor up overnight in a cove with friends. We had a bit of wind when the race started, but as you can see, we weren’t breaking any records. Marty won, and Teri/Jim and Monte and I decided to skip the finish and get the raftup started early.
Lori & Dave joined us before too long and a good time was had by all.
The leaves are just starting to turn here in New York. I had an invite to come back up in 2 weeks to give a talk, and I declined because calendar conflicts. But I really wish I would be able to make it, because in 2 weeks the leaves ought to be spectacular. That alone would make it worth it.
I’ve had Nat King Cole’s Autumn Leaves running through my head non-stop. I love that song.
It will always remind me of a lovely day outside of Parma on our honeymoon.
I did not bring the camera with me this morning, and I’m kicking myself, because the scenery in the Westchester area is so pretty. I’ll settle for a photo of a picture hanging in my hotel room. I may have mentioned before that I love tulips, so I especially liked this print. The artist is Debra Jackson, and I googled her and found her website, with a bunch of other nice prints.
I flew to NY today for some meetings tomorrow and Friday. I got to my hotel right around midnight eastern time. I went outside to check out the Harvest Moon. It had just rained here and the sky was very hazy, but the moon was incredibly bright. The faint glimmer to the bottom left of the moon is Jupiter.
This was a special Harvest Moon because it became full a few hours after the Autumnal Equinox. Yes, campers, that means cooler days are ahead.
The lyrics from Neil Young’s Harvest Moon are running through my mind:
“But there’s a full moon risin’
Let’s go dancin’ in the light
We know where the music’s playin’
Let’s go out and feel the night….”
Got some sewing done tonight, had to hem a few things.
It rained (again!) a drizzly rain for quite a while this evening.
Monte made a lovely shrimp pasta for dinner.
Our cable/DVR mysterious stopped working tonight right when we sat down to watch Cash Cab, our new TV program indulgence. I used to think it was so funny how my dad would shout out answers at the TV while watching Jeopardy. I now find myself doing the same thing. Cash Cab: The new Jeopardy. 🙂
I met Lori, Doray, Laura and Ann at the marina and we went out for a long sail. It was very rainy and stormy around us, but we managed to dodge most of it. This is a shot as we were coming back into the cove. We came back at just the right time.
Fall is almost upon us, which means the blistering heat will suddenly vanish, to be slowly replaced by chilly afternoons.
I remember thinking when I was a little girl that my mom was as pretty as a movie star. And I never understood why she would just chuckle when I told her so.
She must have been in her early 20s in this photo, several years before she met my dad. At the time, she couldn’t possibly have imagined how her life was to unfold, the funny kids that would be hers, the profound impact she was to have on all of us, the many places she would live, and all the friends she would make over the years.
One thing’s for sure though — hands down, the best mom in the world. 🙂
I wish we lived closer together, but phone calls and visits will have to make due. She’s always on my mind, but today especially — Happy Birthday Mom!
This morning I had an insanely early call with some colleagues in India, which I needed to head to the office for. I could see that the sunrise was going to be beautiful, but I didn’t have a direct view of it due to the buildings. Catching its reflection in the windows on the building across the way were as close as I got.
I wish I had been able to spend a bit more time taking this shot but I was in a hurry. It’s a tad blurry and the reflection on the right side of the pic is distracting, but it’s the Friday morning moment that I’m sharing for today.
While reading my daily batch of news and blogs this morning, I came upon a blogpost that left me with an unshakable craving for crepes.
So I pulled out Joy of Cooking and whipped up some batter. It has to sit in the fridge for a bit, so by the time Monte gets up we can have crepes for breakfast.
Yum. Can’t wait.
If you, too, would like to make them, and don’t have a Joy of Cooking, here is the recipe:
Basic Sweet Crepes (makes about 12 7 1/2″ crepes)
Combine in a blender or food processor until smooth:
1/2 c all purpose flour
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup lukewarm water
2 large eggs
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 Tbsp sugar
pinch of salt
Pour batter into a pitcher or other container with a pouring lip. Cover with plastic wrap and let stand for 30 mins or refrigerate up to 2 days. (This allows the flour to thoroughly absorb the liquid and gives the gluten in the flour a chance to relax.)
Place a nonstick or seasoned crepe pan over medium heat. Coat with a little unsalted butter.
Pour about 1/4 cup of batter into pan and swirl pan to distribute evenly. Cook until top is set and underside is golden. Flip with fingers, fork or spatula. Cook other side and remove to warm plate or wax paper, if you want to stack them to freeze and save for later (for up to a month).
I like to eat mine with a little powdered sugar sprinkled on top.
About the time we began the rigging the shellback dinghy (our practice boat), I taught myself how to splice 3-strand rope to make the bow painter and for the end of the halyard and main sheet. This would have been 10 years ago or so (my how time flies). Anyway one of the by products of this little endeavor was this shadow box to display some of my knot handiwork. This was before we were married, so I made one for monte, and one for myself. And, now we have 2 🙂
I also cut, mitered and stained the wood for the shadow box frame, had the glass cut to size and made the fabric covered backing board. Wow. When did I ever have that much time on my hands!?!
The one in the middle is called a braided mat. The others from top left, clock-wise are: a double splice, stopper knot, sailor’s cross, turk’s head knot, a splice loop with a monkey’s fist knot on the end, figure eight knot and a lovers’ knot.
