In formation.

After closing Shades last night, Lori, Dave, Joe and Monte and I tried our best to stay awake for iPod wars.  But we have some work to do to get back in top shape 🙂

We slept on the boat last night.  This morning we took a little ride up the cove.  The water is dropping – at 657′ now.

This momma duck and her babies were out for a morning cruise, too.

Jay.

I just can’t seem to be in the right place at the right time.

Hummingbird-feeder-stealth-shot #1 of 2011.

This isn’t exactly a stealth shot…as I took it from across the kitchen at max zoom, which is why it’s so grainy. Last year I got pretty good at this and got some good, clear and upclose shots.

That’s ok.   I like this one.  I’m leaving lots of room for improvement

Birdseye view.

When out back for a walk around, I saw this cardinal perched in the top of one of the 40-50′ tall pecan trees that have just started to leaf out.

He was getting tossed around by gusty winds, but that didn’t interfere with getting his song out.

This photo is grainy due to the 12x digital zoom i used.  But I like the shot because of the red of the bird against the blue sky.

Home wrecker.

This afternoon I kept hearing a knocking on the wall that sounded like a woodpecker.  I snuck around the outside of the house and caught a grainy shot of the varmit by sticking my camera around the corner.

He flew away, but I’m sure will be back.   My mom’s house already has several scars from this guy and he’s working on a new one.

Maybe I’ll spray some hot pepper on the wood up there… don’t know if that will deter him though.

It’s been raining all week.  This bird is obviously a fair-weather woodpecker because he prefers to do his work under the eaves where it’s dry.

Cloisonne.

My mom is a big fan of all-things bird related – both the living and the knick-knack variety.

This little hummingbird was hanging in the kitchen window and caught my eye.

How rude.

Big weekend.   Lori & Dave invited us to stay on Camelot for the first Full-Moon raftup of the year.  The winds were nice today.  We had a great sail down to Bee Creek, and then joined 7 other boats — Pat & Dave on Va Bene, Sara & Mark on Seranade, Robert & Tasha on Voodoo, Bay & Donna on Red Sky,   Rory & Greg and 2 of their friends on Sapphire, Joe on Prelude, and Teri, Jim & Kathy on Island Time.

We brought B-duck, of course.  This mallard got a little territorial and started attacking.  Crazy duck.

Tonight was, of course, a full moon – the full worm moon.  But it is also the closest full moon to the earth in about 20 years, so it has been dubbed a Supermoon.  I tried to get a photo of it, but all I captured was a bright circle of light… I couldn’t get any detail on the surface, it was too bright.  It was pretty to see in person, though.

As usual, a good time was had by all as the night slipped away.

Happy 1st blogoversary!

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my starting this blog.   To mark the occasion, I made a collage using all 365 of the moments that I’ve posted here.

I can recall taking each one.   🙂

I started this in early March last year, in time to capture the signs of Spring, and into the Summer as things began to warm up and as we spend so much time on the lake… then through the changes in Fall and Winter when we spend more of our time on projects and playing with friends on land.  I’ve come full circle, and am looking forward all the moments from the coming year.

Happy Mardi Gras!   and  HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lori and to Mary!

Day #365!!!

Today’s post makes the 365th moment that I have shared with you.  This is a shot of one of the geraniums I planted yesterday that I took today during a break between conference calls.

I’m very pleased that I have stuck with this post-a-photo-per-day-for-a-year project.  There were some days that I found it difficult to see something worth sharing.   But I have to say that most days I looked forward to toting my camera around with me, and was usually pleased to find a moment that was either a photo that I liked or at least made for a nice story to share.

Wow, a year.   365 moments.   It goes by fast.

I look forward to keeping my blog going.  I don’t know that I will be posting something every day, but I am definitely looking forward to posting more moments worth sharing.

A colleague of mine passed away over the weekend after a fight with cancer.  He was only 51.

I can only hope that you all have many more years left on this earth to share with your friends and family.   But since we never know when our time will be up, we have to take the time to enjoy and be thankful for each and every day that we get to spend with them.   I have done that for a year.   And I hope to from here on out…

They're baaack.

As Monte is all too aware, I am NOT a fan of bugs.  Spiders in particular.  So, I am hoping you can appreciate the steely focus and determination with which I leaned in headfirst to within a couple inches of this guy while I manually focused to capture this moment and share with you.

Ok, so what if the spider was no more than 1/4″ long?   We all need to stretch beyond our comfort zone, right? 🙂

I was walking out back this afternoon and was a tad disappointed in the late signs of spring.  But then I saw this web glistening in the sun.   If the spiders are back, Spring must be right around the corner!

Varmits!

Though it’s a Monday, today was a BEAUTIFUL, sunny day.   But a very cold front is on the way, likely to arrive tomorrow.

The squirrels have been especially frantic running around.  I can only imagine that they know it’s going to be freezing soon and they’re looking for a warm place to ride it out.

A couple years back we had 3 of those critters in our attic… what an ordeal it was to get them out.   I’m happy to report they have not breached the defenses again (so far).

I think this is a raccoon pawprint, or at least something bigger than a squirrel.

Gotcha.

Hectic first day back.   But a canceled noon meeting meant that Monte and I could go to lunch together, so we did.  As we were leaving I spotted a squirrel hiding on the fence.   He didn’t run away until after I had taken this shot.  If you look closely you can see a huge pecan in his mouth.

Passing through

I baked 2 pies and yeast rolls, and sides for the feast.  Monte was on turkey duty.

At exactly 1:09PM I stepped outside to cut some fresh rosemary to put inside the turkey before we put it on the grill.   It was completely still, and 77 degrees.   While I was out there the wind began to blow out of the north – the much talked about cold front had just arrived.  By 1:30 the temperature had dropped into the 50’s.     We knew it was coming but it’s still amazing to experience it.

As I was standing in front of the kitchen window, this buck deer trotted by.   We usually see lots of deer in the winter, but I haven’t seen one in a while.

Well, one year ago today my dad passed away.   I can’t believe how quickly a year has gone by.    Rest in peace, dad.

I’m thankful for so many things.   Friends.   Family.   Good fortune.

I hope your day was as nice as mine.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Fall fliers

We worked on the boat today.  We’ll be sore tonight – I guarantee.

While the coals were heating up for dinner tonight, I was stalking several of the last beautiful butterflies that have been fluttering about in the way back.  There were 3 or 4 that were flying back and forth through the trees right over my head.   They were pretty large and had a wing span of 4 or 5 inches.  As they flew by, I could hear the flutter of their wings.

One of them cooperated and allowed me to get several shots.  This one’s body is black with white polkadots which blend right into the wings.
