Deja vu.

My sister-in-law Susanne gave us a basket of amaryllis bulbs in December of 2009.  They bloomed beautifully last year — with gorgeous red flowers.  Last spring after the blooms had faded I cut the spent blooms and put the basket outside to let the foliage feed the bulbs over the summer.   And last fall I dutifully cut the leaves off each bulb and put the basket in a cool dark place in the garage to start their dormant cycle.

I’ve been meaning to pull them out to start the cycle all over again.  I should have done it closer to the holidays but didn’t.  Well, last Sunday I finally dusted off the basket, watered and brought it back inside.

Just 2 days later little tips of green have already started showing on each bulb.  Pretty cool, i must say.    I can’t wait to watch them bloom over the next few weeks.

Tiny flowers.

I’ve been walking around the yard looking for the first signs of life —  but, no flowers or bud yet.

So, in lieu of a shot from outside, this is a closeup of the tiny baby’s breath that came with the Valentine’s day roses.

I leave you with a haiku for the weekend:

Saturday is here.

Do, Relax, Enjoy, Explore.

Best day of the week.

Winter garden.

February 1st ?!!  Yikes, 8.5 percent of 2011 is over already!

Well, the cold front has arrived.  I woke up to temps in the low 30’s and that’s about as warm as it will be for a couple days.

I’m happy to report that the window shades and curtains in the gameroom seem to be working.  The temp in the gameroom was the same as the rest of the house… for the first time on a cold winter day. (yay!)

Even with the shades and curtains, this room still gets a ton of light in the daytime, with the skylights.   The houseplants in the gameroom love it.

This is an ivy plant from a basket my mom sent me for my birthday several months back.   So far so good.

Well, tonight I went out to dinner with friends, and meant to bring my camera to get some shots of downtown Austin at night, but I left it behind.

So, you get the ivy shot instead 😉

Brand new bluebonnet.

I took a walk out back after work tonight.   We’ve been keeping an eye out for signs of bluebonnets.  Usually by late Fall they have started to leaf out.   Unfortunately, this year they seem to be getting a very late start.

Last year was a phenomenal year for bluebonnets.   I can’t wait to see how our wildflower patch grows this year.

A few weeks back I noticed a ton of seedlings in the way back, each showing 2 tiny round leaves.   I looked them up online and found that indeed they are the cotyledon for the Texas bluebonnet.

So, I’ve been on the lookout for the first few leaves making an appearance.

Overall this guy is is about an inch and a half wide.

Grow, baby, grow!

Zantedeschia

Doray and Tom brought a beautiful Calla Lily Friday night.   I wasn’t able to take a shot that does it justice.  It’s lovely.

Today is Sunday.   Monte went golfing.  I ran a few errands to finish some projects before the end of vacation.

We actually have tomorrow off as well … a bit of a bonus vacation day to enjoy.

We just finished watching the Seahawks win their last regular season game to get into the playoffs — by a hair.   Yay!

Do I dare to hope?

Star of Bethlehem

I noticed this flower while dashing past the floral aisle at HEB — a  Star of Bethlehem.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before.   Very pretty.

Didn’t buy it but snapped a quick pic instead.

Flower fuzz

Yes.  That’s right.  Another shot of a zinnia.

Could be the last one of the year.

But I’m not making any promises.   😉

Last one standing

The morning glory that I planted from a single seed back in the spring has grown up and over the 5 foot iron obelisk it was meant to cover.  Most of the leaves and blooms have dried up and are dying, but at the very top there is one bright, beautiful flower left that opens every morning.

I thought I’d capture it before it closes for the last time.

I’m trying something new this Friday.   I’ve learned of another blogger @ bloggingfrombolivia that hosts a just-for-fun contest every Friday in which other bloggers can enter a  close-up, or macro shot.   Sounds like fun.  This is my modest entry 😉

...and more zinnies

Monte brought in a nice bouquet of zinnias from the last planting today.   Keep ’em comin’!

It looks like Spring in the kitchen  🙂

Last hurrah

After the zinnias had just about enough of the summer heat, we cleared them out and planted more from seed about a month or so ago.   We have a nice set of a dozen or so plants that will hopefully get to flower before the first freeze.   I really enjoyed having fresh cut zinnias in the house all summer.   Maybe we’ll have a few to take us through the end of Autumn.

Vortex

We’re still enjoying the roses that Monte gave me for our anniversary.  They are still big, red and beautiful.

After the rain...

I took a walk this afternoon around the neighborhood.  Rain lilies are blooming everywhere after the deluge last week.

Hocus focus...

Tulips – my favorite flower… as seen through the lens, through my glasses.  I have no idea why I took this picture….was just messing around I guess.   This is a watercolor that my friend Ursula painted for us as a wedding present.  She does beautiful botanical drawings.

Now it’s just a moment that I share with you from today on my blog.

Little guy

Long day.   I walked around out back, after the rain had stopped coming down.   We’re having a very different kind of summer than last year.   It’s the end of July,  it hasn’t hit 100 yet, and the rain has been frequent enough to not have to water the lawn much.   Nice.

I took this shot of some of the Penta blooms in the garden.  I didn’t notice the little spider until I uploaded them to view.
