Drove by a house today that has a pair of majestic century plants going into bloom, one on either side of their driveway.
They say these agaves bloom, and then die, after 100 years. Google sez it takes more like 20-40 years. Either way, it’s a sight to see.
Both of these must have been planted when the home was first built about 35 years ago.
Hi Sheila – they take about 20-25 years to get this bloom and afterwards they die. That is sad because they are so beautiful. The bad part is that the stalk attracts bees like crazy. My firend cut it down because they could not go to their pool! They are beautiful. We had one that was 19 years old and it froze a few years back – I was so so sad because it was about time for it to bloom. Boo Hoo. Lynn
I didn’t know about the bees. We’ve seen several bloom (and die) in our old neighborhood. New ones are growing to replace them though.
