The wee hours

November –  wow, the year is sailing on by!

This morning I had some very early meetings to get ready for.   So, I was padding around the house at about 4 AM, making coffee ever so quietly.

This is the typical shot of the no-man’s land between my office and the coffee pot.

I’ll leave you with this…..according to the Mamas & the Papas:  “Monday, Monday…… can’t trust that day…”   (youtube link)

Spooky

Friday.  Full Moon’s Eve.  Game 6 of ALCS – Rangers v Yankees.

It’s all good.

I carved the pumpkins tonight.  1 week out, so they ought to last.

I wish for you a wonderful weekend.

Bye bye birdie

It seems that as Fall has arrived and the sun sinks lower in the sky, the little birdies have flown to other climes.  My fleet of hummingbird feeders have fallen ominously silent.

Saturday night lights

My niece, Julie, arrived tonight for a visit.  We went down to 6th Street and caught the Esther’s Follies show – a must see if you ever make a visit to Austin.   After the show we walked up and down 6th St for a while.   The cross streets are cordoned off at night so that the crowds can walk in the street — no cars.  We buzzed through the beautiful Driskill Hotel lobby and bar, walked over to Congress for a view of the lit Capitol dome.  Unfortunately it’s surrounded by scaffolding for renovations for the forseeable future.

It’s hard for me to pass up any flashing plasticky fluorescent light bauble — I bought these from a street vendor along the way.

Morning has broken

Sunrise this morning was at 7:05.   I watched the sun creep over the house into the back yard, lighting up the trees as it went.   The light at that time of the day is beautiful.  I took this shot about an hour after sunrise.

As I waited for the sun to hit the birdhouse, Cat Stevens’  Morning Has Broken kept running through my head.  Here’s a youtube link if you want to hear it for real.

Colored glass

No special reason for this shot today.   I simply noticed some light reflecting off this hanging glass panel when I walked through the room…. so it caught my eye.   I would love to learn how to work with stained glass one day.   This is a piece  that I bought on one of my Pecan Street Festival excursions many years ago — and still enjoying it.

Top of the morning...

I love Saturday mornings.  8 hours of sleep last night was a welcome bonus.  The windows on the east side of the house cast lots of early morning light across the floor and walls — they glow with shadows from the trees out front.

Fireflies

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Last night we saw the fireflies for the first time this year.   They dart around the back yard  from dusk to dark.  Tonight I went out back to see if I could get a picture of them.

As I’ve been doing this capture-a-moment-per-day project, I’ve started experimenting with free photo editing software.   Picasa is nice because its easy to use, but it doesn’t do much.    Last weekend I wanted to try creating an animated gif, so I downloaded gimp.   After messing around with it for a while tonight, I figured out how to make an animated gif from a selection of photos.     Unfortunately, when I tried to post the animated gif, wordpress didn’t animate it, it just displayed the first frame.   So, now I’m going to try out wordpress’s slideshow feature, which displays a slideshow of multiple images embedded in a posting.   I think the drawback is that it will take a longer time to load, as the images are full size, as opposed to a streamlined gif file.   But I’ll give it a try so you can see my little fireflies flitting around.    I hope it works!

Update:   Ok, it sort of works.   If the delay between frames is too long for your liking, you can mouse over the image, and advance the frames manually by clicking on the arrows that show up.    Boy, that was alot of work.   I hope you enjoy the fireflies.

Pretty windows

Working from home this week.   It’s still nice to stop and notice the pretty things.   This is a shot of the leaded glass windows on the front door.   On mornings earlier in the year, when the sun is a bit lower in the sky, these windows are especially lit up and cast little colorful light spectrum patterns on the wall.    No so much today, and at this hour.   But still nice to look at.

Day's end

This is a wind spinner that was given to me by my friend, Doray.  At this time of the evening, the glass prism in the middle catches the sun as it sets through the trees in the backyard.   Behind the spinner you can see our herb garden, getting ready to pump out tons of basil, rosemary and other good things.

Quiet time

I worked a bit late tonight — too late to meet Monte at the lake after work.   So,  I settled in for some alone time with a glass of wine.   I love candlelight, if you didn’t know that.
